I’m coming back after a small break because I lost my grandpa less than 2 weeks after I published this blog post about Besançon, in which I’ve talked to you about him (I can’t believe this picture is my last picture of him)…

Well, let’s talk about something happier like the last step of our American road trip in Virginia where the mother’s Boyfriend comes from.

After we left our B&B in New England countryside, we had a lot of time to spend on the road before arriving to Yorktown where the grandma’s Boyfriend lives so we stopped in Philadelphia. We only had time to have dinner in an Asian fusion restaurant (Sampan – 124 S 13th St, Philadelphia) and to go see the liberty bell and the Independence hall (this is where the declaration of independence was signed and where the American constitution were adopted) the next day for a quick visit before going back on the road.

Independence Hall

In Virginia we visited 3 cities that are part of the America’s Historic Triangle: Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg.

Yorktown :

We arrived in Yorktown, a small town where the grandma lives. In this quiet city there are so many beautiful American houses. I loved living the real American experience, you know when you are with native people, far away from the tourist trails, it’s so much better! And I also loved grandma’s handmade food like banana bread or fried chicken, so yummy!

Grandma’s house were completely redone and decorated by my mother-in-law, this is why it might remind you of the house in Milan that I’ve talked to you about so many times. Isn’t super nice and cosy?

And at the back of the garden, there is this typical American barn, I love it!

Jamestown :

Jamestown is the location where the first North American English colony was. In Jamestown Settlement, you can discover debris of houses, taverns and industrial buildings and also the last findings of the archaeologists. We were given a guided tour, it was interesting but a bit too long so I had fun spying on the deers walking in the forest.

Williamsburg:

If you come in Virginia state, there’s a place you cannot miss: Williamsburg! This is where is Colonial Williamsburg, a restored town made up of 80 original public buildings, 50 other restored buildings (houses, shops, public buildings) and 36 hectares of gardens. It’s the period from the 18th century that is represented through furniture of the period and residents dressed like in the old times. It’s a wonderful open-air museum which takes us right to the heart of the first hours of the American History.

Anne Durrieu dress

You will also finds coffee shops to grab a bite to eat like this wonderful apple pie on the picture below and restaurant like the King Arms Tavern where we had dinner one night. To be able to eat good food surrounded by old furnitures, candle lit and with a woman wearing a period costume singing and playing an old instrument was quite an experience!

King Arms Tavern – 416 E Duke of Gloucester St, Williamsburg

It looks amazing no? We really have the impression to be back in the 18th century. I absolutely loved this place, this architecture is breathtaking but it’s too bad the shops all look alike.

Colonial Willamsburg – 101 Visitor Center Dr, Williamsburg, VA 23185, United States

Let’s go out from Colonial Williamsburg to see the rest of the city. We had a drink in this amazing place but I’m sorry I don’t remember the name… shame on me!

It’s also in Williamsburg that the uncle’s Boyfriend lives in this beautiful house you can see on the picture below. We admired his antiquities collection (yes it’s a shared passion in the Boyfriend’s family), ate a delicious pulled pork and played with his dogs. What a wonderful day we spent!

York river state park:

The last day was finally very sunny so we took this opportunity to go on a canoe tour in York river state park with a tour guide who talked to us about fauna and flora around us. It was a perfect day to end our rainy holidays!

Now here there are some random pictures.

The delicious pancakes of Cracker Barrel.

If you like to hunt antique, goods, you will be happy in Virginia because there are so many antique malls and they are huge!

And for shopping, go to Williamsburg Premium Outlet to buy clothes at factory prices. You will find brands like J. Crew, Levi’s or Gap (the top below is Gap’s). It’s so worth it, for example we bought Levi’s jeans at 40€!

Williamsburg Premium Outlet – 5715 Richmond Rd, Williamsburg, VA

Virginia beach

I’m so happy I finally visited Virginia and discovered its wild landscapes and lived like an American for a week with the grandma and my mother-in-law. Thank you again for this amazing week!

The Boyfriend and his mother

After all these years we finally could do this American trip to go see the Boyfriend’s family but what’s nice is that he has family everywhere in the world so maybe our next destination will be on another continent to go see some other member of his family…

Anyway, you can reread the previous steps of our road trip here:

– 1st step in NYC part 1 and part 2

After NYC, New Haven and Newport let’s continue with our American trip with the island of Martha’s Vineyard and the city of Boston.

Martha’s Vineyard :

We wanted to visit one of New England islands but we didn’t know which one. We hesitated for a while between Nantucket, Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. Mathilde recommended us Martha’s Vineyard so we book a hotel at the last minute, we took the ferry and arrived under heavy rain at Martha’s Vineyard, one of the biggest island of New England (32 km on 16).

We stayed at Mansion House Inn which wasn’t bad apart from the breakfast.

Mansion House Inn – 9 Main Street, Vineyard Haven

After a good night sleep I was happy to stroll on this island so famous for its beautiful summer houses. Even though it’s a popular place for tourists, it is still conserved because there are no hotel resorts, no fast food nor brand chains. There are 6 villages in the island. We’ve visited 3 of them : Vineyard Haven, Edgardtown and Oak Bluffs. We started by Vineyard Haven because that’s where our hotel was, then we went to Edgartown where there are typical houses from the XIXth century (the golden era of whale hunting) each more beautiful than the last.

Like in Newport, we eat a lot of crab here to my delight and if you like fudge, don’t miss Murdick’s Fudge (21 N Water St, Edgartown).

Edgartown’s lighthouse is one of the 5 lighthouses on the island. I love lighthouse, I don’t really know why but I think they are mysterious and fascinating.

We were “lucky” this day because the sun finally came out for a few hours even if the wind was freezing. I took off my coat for the picture but you can easily see that I was freezing to death (the stripes jacket is from Nice Things).

Then we took the bus to Oak Bluffs where you can see the famous gingerbread cottages. 300 colorful houses that seem to be straight out of Hansel and Gretel’s. These wooden houses have been constructed in 1850 and are today summer houses. At the beginning of May the high season hadn’t started yet so all the houses were empty, it was like being in an abandoned Disney village, it was a bit creepy!

Martha’s Vineyard is a real jewel that I wish I could go back to one day.

Boston:

Like I’ve told you in the previous blog post, we decided at the last minute to go to Boston because I loved this city when I discovered it a few years ago and because the Boyfriend had never been there. We only stayed 24h in Boston so of course it was too short but managed to see as much as we could.

We stayed at The Boxer hotel that we booked randomly and it was a good surprise. Besides, the hotel lends nice bikes to discover the city differently (even if to be honest, visiting Boston with a bicycle is not the best idea since it’s damn difficult to climb up on these streets).

The Boxer hotel – 107 Merrimac Street – BOSTON

Let’s continue with the good adresses we tried like The Daily Catch, a small restaurant which doesn’t seem like much but intrigued us and there was a big queue outside so it’s usually a good sign. It’s an amazing Sicilian sea food restaurant! The chef is Chinese and handles pans with a lot of skill and the way he cooks is quite fascinating. It was damn good, bravo Chef! However, get prepared to queue up (the next day at 4pm the queue was even bigger).

The Daily Catch – 323 Hanover St – BOSTON

Here is another Boston Must on the other side of the street: Mike’s Pastry. Here as well the queue is very big but it’s because they are the best cannolis in the area, it’s a real institution!

Mike’s Pastry :300 Hanover St, BOSTON

Now, here are some pictures of the city.

I’m aware that Boston deserves its own blog posts, the few pictures cannot do it justice because it’s an amazing city!

It’s during a coffee break in a Prêt à Manger in Boston that we booked our last night in New England. We were looking for a cute B&B lost in the countryside and I think we can easily say that we just found it! The Roseledge Country Inn is a colonial farm from 1720 and furnished with antiquities like I love and the breakfast was delicious and homemade. Isn’t it super nice?

This B&B is indeed in the middle of nowhere but while we were looking for a place to have dinner we came across a huge building. Foxwoods is like a mini Las Vegas : it’s the biggest casino of North America but there are also hotels, restaurants, an outlet… We spent a unreal evening, doing shopping at 11pm at J. Crew with discounts of 70% (350 Trolley Line Blvd, Mashantucket).

Roseledge Country Inn – 418 Route 164, Preston

Let’s finish with these souvenirs we brought back from New England. See you for the last stop in Virginia. Have a good weekend my friends!

After NYC, let’s go to the 2nd part of our trip: New England!

We were mainly in USA to visit the Boyfriend’s family but we took this opportunity to spend a few days in this area that both of us we didn’t know. To select the cities to visit was a tough choice because we didn’t have a lot of time and we wanted to see them all but we finally decided to go to New Haven, Newport, Marth’as Vineyard island and Boston (it was my 2nd time in Boston but I liked it so much the 1st time that I wanted to take the Boyfriend since he had never been there). Thank you to Mathilde who gave us valuable advice, if you’re planning a trip to New England you have to go on her blog which is a gold mine! She also worked on the guide vert Michelin which was very useful to us.

For those who missed the 2 first episodes (you can read it again here and here), we spent 3 days in NYC and there we rented a car for our little road trip. We originally planned to rent a standard car but the Boyfriend allowed himself to be persuaded to take a HUGE pick up! He tried to make me believe that it was the guy from the car rental’s fault after admitting that he just thought it could be fun. I must admit that even I had a blast.

New Haven :

We stayed a very short time in New Haven because we just wanted to visit Yale University but the weather was so bad that we just took a few pictures of the university and the houses around before going to taste the « best pizza in America » at Frank Pepe. Of course it was good but the Boyfriend is Italian so you can easily imagine that it wasn’t the best pizza I ever had.

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana - 157 Wooster St, New Haven, CT 06511, États-Unis

Newport :

Then we took the road to Newport where we stayed in an amazing Airbnb in a beautiful Victorian’s house located at only 10 minutes walk from the sea. I loved the decoration, a combination of antique and nautical.

Isn’t it beautiful? And the breakfast was so good, everything was homemade!

Above you can see our lovely room. I strongly recommend you this charming bed & breakfast where we wish we could have stayed longer.

Marshall Slocum Inn – 29 Kay St, Newport, RI

For lunch we tried of course the local dish: the lobsters roll (a lobster sandwich) at the Lobster Bar. It’s the 1st time I had one so of course I cannot compare but it was really good (the nautical bracelet that you can see on my wrist is a KJP, a Rhode Island brand) !

Lobster Bar – 31 Bowen’s Wharf | Newport, RI

Now let’s have a look at the city, what a cute city! I absoluty fell in love with all these colored house fronts, these doors adorned with wreaths and fun doorknokers like anchors, pineapples or whales… Did you know that pineapple is the symbol of friendship and hospitality?

The harbour is also quite cute with these nice wooden houses and these cute fishing huts.

We were already pretty in love with the region after this 1 day in New England so we couldn’t wait to be in Martha’s Vineyard because it’s a popular destination for the beauty of the landscapes and for the chic summer residences.

If you go to Newport, don’t forget to visit the mansions, they are private mansions of rich XIXth century businessmen. We didn’t had time to visit one but it seems that it’s worth seeing. We definitely have to come back to see them and enjoy the city without rain.

Greenwich Village & West Village :

Kate Spade – 400 Bleecker Street

Nars – 413 Bleecker Street

Magnolia Bakery - 401 Bleecker Street

Dominique Ansel Bakery - 189 Spring Street

The Butcher’s Daughter – 581 Hudson Street

Sant Ambroeus – 259 West, 4th Street

A few weeks ago I flew to USA for 2 weeks. It’s been years since the Boyfriend and I wanted to plan this trip with the Boyfriend so I could meet his American family (he is Italian but also American on his mother’s side). The trip was divided in 3 steps: NYC, New England (Newport, Martha’s Vineyard and Boston) and we ended by Virginia (Yorktown and Williamsburg) at his grandmother’s. Unfortunately except short sunny periods, we just had rain, wind and cold temperatures the whole trip. :(

Let’s start with NYC that I divided in 2 because I had to many pictures to show you. I didn’t know how to divide them so I’ve decided to talk you of the eastern neighborhoods first and then in a 2nd post of the western neighborhoods.

It was my 2nd time in NYC because the 1st time was a few years ago with my family when I visited the main museums and monuments and the Boyfriend obviously knows this city quite well. This is why we decided we will just be strolling around instead of visiting like proper tourists so don’t be surprised if I don’t talk about some very touristic places (for example you won’t see even one picture of the statue of liberty).

First of all let’s talk about the Novotel Time Square hotel, the hotel we stayed in for 2 nights. The design is modern, it’s located in the middle of Time Squares, the breakfast is generous and the beds are so comfy (God bless king size beds). If you’re looking for a a first class hotel (it’s a 4 stars’ hotel) and well located, this is the one!

This is the view from our room, pretty cool hum?

And this is the amazing view from the breakfast room. Too bad that it was pouring rain outside, it must be so nice to have breakfast on this terrace.

Novotel Times Square – 226 W 52nd St, New York, NY 10019

Then we had to go to the M&M’s store (1600 Broadway) to bring some peanut butter M&M’s to the colleagues (the 1kg bag disappeared in less than a week) before going to the Rockefeller Center for some shopping at J.

J. Crew – 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10112

If you like shopping, don’t forget to go on Fifth Avenue because it’s the place where you can find everything from fancy shops to department stores like Urban Outfitters (521 5th avenue) or coffee shops. By the way, I just discovered that Urban Outfitters had its own coffee shop!

Toby’s Estate Coffee – 160 Fifth Avenue

rooftop of the 230 Fifth bar (just show your ID at the entrance and they will let you go up)

Ralph Lauren Coffee -2nd Floor, 711 5th Ave, New York

In regard to parks, because of the bad weather we didn’t even set foot in Central Park, we just walked along Madison Square Park to enjoy the pretty flowers.

In Madison Square Park there is a Shake shack. I’ve heard so much about this fast food that I definitely wanted to go but of course we couldn’t go to this one because of the rain so we went to the one located in 125 Murray Street (between West Street & North End Ave). I thought it was good but it wasn’t that amazing. However I totally agree that it’s 10x better than MacDo so I wouldn’t say no to a Shake Shack in Paris.

Close to Madison Square there is Eataly, you know the temple of Italian food that I’ve already talked to you about. After going to the one in Torino, Milan and Rome, I went therefore to the one in NYC which is I think as nice as the one in Rome (but my favorite one still is the one in Torino). I can’t wait for Eataly to open in Paris in 2018!!!

Eataly -200 Fifth Avenue

And do you see this dog with its own shoes that we saw in Union Square?! We saw so many of them in the city, everyone is so stylish in NYC, even dogs!

What’s amazing with this city is that you only have to change of district to change the atmosphere so you could almost feel like you’ve moved to another country like in Chinatown or in Little Italy. « Fuhgeddaboudit ! »

For the Boyfriend it almost feels like home.

And the street art in this area is pretty cool.

I’m so happy, I was lucky enough to be able to visit the Facebook and Instagram offices thanks to Kristen that I met at an Instameet in Paris. It’s not the head office because it’s in San Francisco but it was really nice to be able to visit the offices of my favorite app and to discuss with Kristen about it. I took this opportunity to talk with her about the Instagram update on feed change that everyone panicked about. After all I think it can actually be a good thing because you will still be able to see every pictures, you just will see them in a different order. Plus the time you will post a picture won’t matter anymore which is good especially when you have jet lag in a foreign country. So don’t stress about it plus I don’t have as many likes as I used to so it can’t be worse…

Close by there is Momofuku Noodle Bar, the restaurant empire created by David Chang where the Boyfriend had wanted to go for such a long time. It seems that it’s always full but we were lucky enough to find a table immediately and it was amazing! The Boyfriend even said these were the best ramens he ever had in his life!

Then, here are some pictures of the financial district where we just did was to come and go.

Above you can see the September 11 Memorial. The memorial is located at the World Trade Center site, the former location of the Twin Towers, which were destroyed during the September 11 attacks. It is made of 2 30m pools where water fall in. The movement of the water represents the collapse of the Twin Towers and the water constantly recycled represents the memory of the American people : “Time passes by but we will never forget.” It’s impressive and moving!

September 11 Memorial -200 Liberty St

Let’s finish with Brooklyn where we saw the Boyfriend’s great-ant. This doesn’t mean the trendy Brooklyn, but the “real one” like the Boyfriend says.

Ita is a wonderful person of 95 years old who mixes French, Arab, English and Spanish in the same sentence! I don’t think I have ever met someone who loves life more than she does. She’s an amazing character!

Then we strolled a bit in the “fancy Brooklyn” before going on a transfer boat to enjoy the few glimmers of light.

See you next Friday for some strolls in Chelsea, Upper West side, Greenwich and West village (my favorite area).

Have a good weekend guys!
